"Prep time is up! Four teams, one judge, speakers—ready when you are!".

This was my first debate experience; an impromptu motion shoved right in my face.
An interesting fact about this debate is that I uttered not a single word. Not one!
Two reasons: fear and ignorance.

I was terrified to speak up. Beyond that, my knowledge of social, cultural, and political issues was incredibly minute. I literally had no stance whatsoever on the issue at hand. Somehow, day two at trials was much better. I finally spoke up! Thankfully, I got into the team. Not once, but twice—two years dedicated to intentional growth within the Ghana National Debate Team.

Training sessions just seemed to go on and on, reading materials pretty much piled up, and the tournaments got more and more competitive by the second. In the moment of it all, it felt overwhelming. However, the reality is that with every single motion, my resolve to delve into the very depth of issues intensified. With every single teammate I was paired with, I was enlightened and exposed to diverse yet intriguing perspectives. With every single training session I engaged in, my scope of knowledge inherently broadened. With every single feedback I received from team coaches and judges, I gained constructive feedback and was challenged to be better than before. And of course, with every single speech I gave, I felt my shaky voice grow clearer and louder.

My growth within the team was evident and exceptional—an experience I wouldn’t trade! Growth was the incentive, good enough to keep me going. It was the outcome of genuine effort and resilience towards altering my imperfections. To anyone looking to apply, go right ahead.

A few pointers though:

  • First, knowledge really sets you apart from the lot. Be sure to thoroughly familiarise yourself with all reading materials you are given prior to trials.

  • Next, mistakes are totally fine. Anytime you feel discontent with your speech or displeased with your performance generally, seek feedback. Be less defensive towards it and more open-minded to receiving it.

  • Also, make impactful connections. Be ready to meet new people, share ideas, and build bonds.

  • Lastly, speak up. Don’t be silent. Your opinion might just get you noticed, and that could be a game changer. Be your authentic self. When you speak, embody composure and self-confidence. Even when anxiety sets in, let your shaky voice be as loud as ever! The beauty of debate is that all opinions are welcome.

Now, when you successfully join the team, put in the effort, be intentional about your growth, track your progress, be open to criticism, and of course, live in the moment!
